Any team would love to have Aroldis Chapman in the back of their bullpen, but the Yankees made a great move by trading him to the Chicago Cubs. With Chapman set to be a free agent this fall, the Yankees cashed in by moving him for four players, headlined by top prospect Gleyber Torres. With no extension agreement in place this late in the season, it seemed likely that the Yankees were going to lose Chapman to free agency. The perfect time to move him was right now.
The Yankees still have two of baseball’s premier relievers: Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller. This is just a smart move that has been executed at the right time by GM Brian Cashman.
“This isn’t a white flag,” Yankees GM Brian Cashman said. “It is a rearrangement.”
The Yankees took the opportunity to get younger. Gleyber Torres is only 19 and could be the Yankees shortstop of the future. Adam Warren, who was a member of the Yankees for four seasons prior to 2016, will return to the Bronx. Also in the deal are minor league outfielders Billy McKinney and Rashad Crawford.
The Yankees are sitting 4.5 games out of the AL Wild Card and there is lots of time to make a run.
