How the Angels Would Lineup if the MLB Lacked Trades and Free Agency

Obviously trades and free agency are both instrumental parts of the MLB. With the Angels failing to look like contenders this year, I will examine how they would look if trades and free agency did not exist.

Starting Lineup

  1. Howie Kendrick, 2B
  2. Kole Calhoun, RF
  3. Mike Trout, CF
  4. Mark Trumbo, 1B
  5. Mike Napoli, C
  6. Kendrys Morales, DH
  7. Jean Segura, 3B
  8. Randal Grichuk, LF
  9. Erick Aybar, SS

Reserves

  1. Peter Bourjos, OF
  2. Sean Rodriguez, UTIL
  3. Hank Conger, C
  4. CJ Cron, 1B

I like this look on the Angels’ offense. Howie Kendrick was a career .292 hitter with the Angels and could set the table for Calhoun, Trout, Trumbo, Napoli, and Morales. Jean Segura would shift over from his natural shortstop position to play third base. Mike Napoli would return to catching, although he could mix in at first base and DH to give Conger some starts behind the plate. This could force Trumbo to play third base and bump either Aybar or Segura out of the lineup.

Pitching Staff

  1. John Lackey, RHP
  2. Garrett Richards, RHP
  3. Patrick Corbin, LHP
  4. Ervin Santana, RHP
  5. Tyler Skaggs, LHP

Bullpen

  1. Francisco Rodriguez, Closer
  2. Darren O’Day, Setup Man
  3. Kevin Jepsen, Setup Man
  4. Jordan Walden, Middle Relief
  5. Will Smith, Middle Relief
  6. Jered Weaver, Long Relief
  7. Tyler Chatwood, Long Relief

John Lackey would be the ace of this solid staff. Richards is an electric number two starter. A pair of lefties in Corbin and Skaggs, along with Santana would round out the starting rotation. Long relievers Weaver and Chatswood could make spot starts if necessary. Walden and Smith would man the middle innings and O’Day and Jepsen would set it up for K-Rod to come in and close out the 9th inning.

What could have been…
