2016 MLB Opening Day Countdown: San Diego Padres Team Preview

By: Tucker Peterson

As the 2016 MLB season draws closer, we will preview every single team in the reverse regular season standings order of the 2015 season. Today we will provide analysis on the Miami Marlins and the San Diego Padres.

2015 Record: 74-88 | 4th in NL West

2015 Recap: The 2015 season was quite the culture change for the San Diego Padres, who hired a new GM in AJ Preller. As we all know, Preller made numerous blockbuster trades for big name players such as Justin Upton, Craig Kimbrel, Wil Myers, Derek Norris. Preller continued this culture change by even spending money on big time free agents, such as James Shields and his record breaking (for San Diego) contract. Unfortunately, most of these acquisitions did not pan out and the 2015 Padres actually lost more games than the 2014 Padres. They even fired Bud Black less than halfway into the season and had two interim Managers who are no longer with the organization (Dave Roberts – Manager, Los Angeles; Pat Murphy, Bench Coach, Milwaukee).

2016 Outlook: San Diego’s outlook is looking pretty bleak for 2016. The culture that AJ Preller began erecting in 2015 seems to already be on its way out. Not long after the 2015 season, Preller traded away closers Joaquin Benoit and Craig Kimbrel for prospects. It doesn’t seem like Preller has acquired much in the offseason, signing most of his free agents to 1-year contracts. It looks as if Wil Myers will transition to playing first base full time, alleviating a log-jam in the outfield. Andrew Cashner will probably slide into the 3-hole in the rotation, but San Diego lacks true starters to round out the rotation.
