The Seattle Mariners have claimed A.J. Schugel off of waivers from the Diamondbacks and designated Lefty Tyler Olsen in order to clear a spot in the 40-man roster. The 26-year-old-lefty debuted in the majors last year posting a 5.40 ERA over 13.1 innings (11 games) and held a record of 1-1.
Schugel was designated for assignment to clear space on the 40-man-roster after the signing of Zack Greinke. Schugel posted a 4.84 ERA in 115 1/3 innings with the Diamondbacks Triple-A affiliate in Reno. It is still unclear what Schugel’s role for the Mariners organization will be, but putting up those numbers in a ball park that is very hitter friendly should indicate that Schugel will have a lot more success if he plays at Safeco Field.
