Today, the Tampa Bay Rays added catcher Hank Conger to the roster. Conger is only 27 years old and is controllable, which is key for the Rays.
In fact, Conger is one of baseball’s better pitch framers, but could not throw out base stealers in the 2015 season, which is to believe why the Astros parted ways with him for cash. I think the Rays will fix this problem with ease.
In addition, Conger is a switch hitter and has a big powerful swing, but he needs to make contact with the baseball instead of trying to swing for the fences in every at-bat. Conger belted a single season career high with 11 home runs. Also, Conger drove in 33 RBIs.
Finally, Conger will most likely battle with Rene Rivera for the backup job. The Rays have had horrible offensive production from their catchers in the last 5 to 6 years. Hopefully this catchers can turn that around.
Note: Good cheap pickup for the Rays that could turn out being a key piece.
