Today the Angels traded shortstop Erick Aybar and pitching prospects Sean Newcomb and Christopher Ellis to the Braves for shortstop Andrelton Simmons and catching prospect Joe Briceno. The Angels will also send $2.5 million to the Braves.

Simmons, who is known as a defensive wizard, hit .265 last season and had 44 RBIs. The 26-year old is under contract through 2020 at an average salary of $10.6 million per year.

Erick Aybar had comparable numbers to Simmons last season. He hit .270 and also had 44 RBIs. He has spent his entire 10-year career with the Angels.

Sean Newcomb, a 6’5″ lefty, is a very highly regarded pitching prospect and is considered one of baseball’s top 100 prospects.

It was reported that the Mets had inquired about Simmons, but the Braves chose to deal him to Angels instead.
