Daniel Murphy and Carlos Torres were partners in crime tonight, coming up with possibly the defensive play of the year and following it up with the winning runs in the 13th inning as the Mets (71-56) win their seventh straight and sweep the Phillies, 9-4.
Mets were 0-13 w/RISP when Murphy laced a one-out double in the top of the 13th inning, scoring Torres (who had singled) and Curtis Granderson with the go-ahead runs as part of a four run inning.
In a game that saw the Mets fall behind 5-0 after just three innings before hitting three home runs to tie it at 5-5, the unlikely hero tonight was Torres. The reliever came into the game in the bottom of the tenth with two outs and was part of one of the most bizarre plays you will see.
With two outs, Jeff Francoeur lined a shot off Torres’ foot that caromed between first and second, where Murphy dove to his right and smothered it with his back to first base. After fumbling for the ball, he blindly backhanded it in the direction of first base, where a streaking Torres grabbed it, beating Francouer to the bag by a split second for the out.
Starter Jonathan Niese (ND) unraveled in the third inning, when the Phillies scored five times, highlighted by a Darin Ruf 2-run homerun.
But the Mets came right back in the fourth on a Travis d’Arnaud 2-run home run (his 9th), to cut the Philly lead to 5-2. In the fifth, the Mets continued their barrage against starter Aaron Harang when Granderson led off with a single and Yoenis Cespedes blasted a long home run to center field (his 8th as a Met, 26 overall) to make it 5-4. With two outs, Kelly Johnson cracked one to right (#12) and the Mets had come all the way back, 5-5.
The Mets bullpen was magnificent again, going seven shutout innings and allowing just three hits. Torres gets the win (5-5) going 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit.
What a road trip. Mets went 8-1 on the trip and are now 15 games over .500 for the first time since 2008. The sweep of the Phils was the 13th series sweep for the Mets this season. Mets set a team record during this 7-game win streak, scoring 73 runs.
No time to catch their breath as the Red Sox come into Citi Field for the first time this weekend to face a well rested Matt Harvey on Friday, Jacob deGrom on Saturday and Noah Syndergaard on Sunday.
The Nationals also won tonight, so the Mets lead remains at 6.5 games. The win lowers the Mets Magic Number to 30.
