Today, Smyly made his anticipated return to the mound. Smyly’s last start was May 5th against the rival Red Sox. In that May 5th start Smyly hurt himself and was placed on the 60 day DL. Today, he was activated from the disabled list and it appears his torn labrum is healed. Smyly entered today’s game with a 0-1 record and 2.70 ERA in 16.2 innings of work. Now, Smyly was facing a hot hitting Rangers team. Smyly had an up and down start that shown signs that he was ready to step back on the mound, but also a lack of missing bats. Drew Smyly outing looks like this: 4 innings of work while punching out 4 batters and walking only 2. So he had some command today in his return, but what hurt his outing was giving up 5 earned runs. He gave up 7 hits and 2 of those hits ended as home runs. Rangers swept the Rays and Smyly’s record falls to 0-2 with his ERA bumping up to 4.35.
In addition, to today’s game Rangers rookie Ryan Strausborger hit his first career home run and also went 3 for 4 at the plate. Kevin Kiermaier was the best bat today for the Rays and going 3 for 4 at the plate and swiping a bag.
