For Pirates fans, tonight is a big night. Not only does the Buccos ace, Gerrit Cole, take the mound to face the Cincinnatti Reds tonight, but the not so distant future of the Pirates will be making their debut for the AAA Indianapolis Indians. SP Tyler Glasnow, and 1B Josh Bell will get their first taste of Victory Field and International League play as the Indians take on the Charlotte Knights.
For Glasnow, a 21 year old 6′-8″ right hander, tonight’s start will signal the beginning of the end of his minor league career. Glasnow is regarded as baseball’s #9 prospect. After missing a month with an ankle injury, and beginning the season in A Short Season West Virginia, Glasnow was promoted to AA Altoona. Going in to tonight’s start, Glasnow has posted a 5-4 record on the season with a 2.50 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP. In 68.1 innings, he has struck out 88 batters while walking 21. Opposing batters are batting just .180 against him. He has 31 strikeouts over his last 3 appearances, over 19 innings.
For Josh Bell, the call to Indianapolis came after appearing in 96 games with the Curve, where he hit .307 with an .803 OPS. Bell has 5 HR and 60 RBI on the season, batting in the 3rd spot. He’ll bat 7th for the Indians tonight.
