Yesterday, the Tigers parted ways with closer Joakim Soria, trading him to the Pirates for 22 year old shortstop/outfield prospect JaCoby Jones. The deal was reported by Jon Heyman. Prospect JaCoby Jones is at currently Double-A and is having a good season between Single-A and Double-A. He has only played in 3 games at Double-A. So, I’ll just give you the Single-A stats. He did hit .253 with 14 stolen bases and 10 homers with 58 RBIs. He has developed a lot thru all lower leagues and will most likely remain a shortstop thru out his career. JaCoby Jones is now ranked #11 and is the Tigers best shortstop in the Tigers farm system.
Jones is a strong, athletic, and big shortstop. Jones has quick hands which translate to a quick bat and raw power, but he still needs to refine his approach and not try to hit everything over the fence. His speed and aggressive style on the base paths make him a threat to steal. Jones has played shortstop regularly over the last two seasons and he’s improved at the premium position, with his plus athleticism certainly helping him. Jones could eventually be a future all-star, but needs to use his skills to make more adjustments. If he can do that, he has the raw tools to be an exciting difference-maker.
