Today, at the MLB Deadline the Rays traded set up man Kevin Jepsen to the Twins for 2 minor league pitchers. The 2 pitchers are Chih-Wei Hu and Alexis Tapia. The deal was reported by Ken Rosenthal.
Next, lets talk about the Rays 2 newest prospects. Chih-Wei Hu was the Twins #20 prospect and is currently at advanced Single-A. He has a 5-3 record with 84.2 innings under his belt and owns a 2.44 ERA with punching out 73 Ks. He doesn’t walk many batters only 19 in Single-A. The 21 year old has a fastball that can have extra life on it. He has a palmball and changeup. Which ever one is working one day will be used more than the other one, but he will focus more on the changeup because the Rays want their pitchers to have a really good changeup. His curveball is good, but could use a tweak. He is toying with a slider. He is going to be a solid starter in his future.
Futhermore, Here is Alexis Tapia, a 19 year old pitcher who can either start or be in the bullpen. Tapia’s 2015 season is looking good. He was just promoted to High Single-A and overall has pitched between both Single-A’s to a 1-2 record with a 3.60 ERA with punching out 34 batters and walking only 7.
Now, the Twins have a quality set up man for Glen Perkins. Jepsen is a good pitcher that can get any batter out. Jepsen this season has pitched himself to a 2.85 ERA in 41.2 innings and struck out 34 batters. Jepsen has one more year of control and becomes a free agent after the 2016 season.
